Looking to get outside this summer? Make some new friends? Maybe even fulfil last year’s new resolution of losing weight or being more active? Everyone loves putting in the hard yards right at the deadline after all. Well, look no further! Here at Star Observer we’ve reached out to sporting organisations around Melbourne and put together a Sports Wrap Up hotter than that one day you forget to pack sunscreen.
What’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold. Australian LGBT Ice Hockey started without a team at the Midumma Carnival, participating simply looking for players to form a team. President Carl Jackson mentions the team “is excited to introduce even more people in our community to this incredible sport. The club has grown quickly over the past six months, and we're looking forward to adding even more players to the roster in 2020. Applications for 2020 are now open on our website”.
If being ice cold is a little too much for you – maybe you’re a fan of something a bit warmer. Melbourne Surge Water Polo club has seen immense success this season with five out of its six teams making the Victorian State Championship Finals, including its inaugural women’s team. As of publication the grand final results were unknown – but we have our fingers crossed wishing the club success as they end the 2019 season and prepare for the 2020 International Gay & Lesbian Aquatics competition, hosted right here in Melbourne at MSAC between 20-25 February 2020.
Got a new year’s resolution for more balance in your life? How about climbing a rock wall then relaxing with a movie? Urban Climb Collingwood and ClimbingQT’s have partnered for the LGBTQIA+ Uprising event. Join them from 6PM at Urban Climb Collingwood for a social climb welcoming climbers of all experience levels. Once your arms and legs can handle no more, relax on a beanbag or cushion in the yoga studio at 8PM for a screening of the award-winning climbing classic, Valley Uprising. Discounted entry of $16 – and bring your own cushions/bean bags.
Not a fan of the cold? Prefer to get hot, sweaty, up close and personal? The Melbourne Wranglers Wrestling Club are taking a much-needed rest over the Christmas break but will be back on the 10th January 2020 at the new Dominance MMA gym on Harper St in Abbotsford.
Getting in the festive spirit, Bushrangers Festive Fund-ranger is taking place at The Fox Hotel in Collingwood on Friday 20th December from 6.30PM. Featuring Arm Wrestling and Karaoke competitions – and a raffle – there’s something everyone can get involved in!
The festive spirit continues this holiday season with the Dance Cats. Perfect that very early Sunday morning dancefloor boogie. They are celebrating with an afternoon tea dance party on Saturday 21st December at South Yarra Community Baptist Church. $10 at the door, bring a small plate to share. If you can’t make that – Dance Cats have their same sex, queer Dancesport event on Saturday 1st February 2020 from 6PM at Collingwood Town Hall, just $25 for some good old-fashioned fun!
The Christmas Lunch and Dinner calories are always difficult to burn off. The Melbourne Frontrunners show no signs of slowing down, allowing you to burn off that little bit extra from Christmas parties or the day itself. With four running events a week with different locations, excuses are hard to find – so join them and enjoy the freedom and challenge of running. Prefer picking up and putting down heavy things to running? The Melbourne Chargers head in to 2020 preparing for the Bingham Cup. From December 14th, they have partnered with Optimus High Performance Centre coach Jake Leslie for a series of Lift and Lunch sessions. All are welcome, but spaces are limited.
The holiday season is really an opportunity to appreciate and celebrate the positive impact we have had over the last year and to come together as family. Despite the competitive nature of sports, we’re all one big family and as such, the Melbourne Argonauts were shortlisted for Rowing Australia’s Club of the Year. The award was eventually taken out by Fremantle Rowing club, but Star Observer would like to say congratulations to the Melbourne Argonauts and good luck as they head to the Rutherglen Regatta in January.
The Melbourne Rovers continue their Sunday Social Soccer program. Join the Rovers at Fawkner Park from 3.30PM to 5.00PM. All skill levels are welcome – just bring your runners, a water bottle and a light & dark shirt. Winter competition starts in February – so now is a great time to get involved.
With the Australian Open rapidly approaching in the new year, you may find yourself looking for a chance to work on that serve or drop shot. VicTennis provides casual games for the community every Sunday at the Malvern Tennis Centre in Armadale from 1PM until 5PM for $15. Come along to have a hit – there is no need to book, just show up with a racquet and running shoes.
Melbourne Smashers have partnered with Midsumma to run their own event called “Serve It, Smash It, Love It” that gives everyone the opportunity to try Badminton on February 1st from 11am to 2pm at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. No experience is necessary. If you can’t wait to Badminton earlier, the Smashers play most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at MSAC.
Alongside the Melbourne Smashers at Midsumma will be our whole sporting family with representatives from clubs above and many, many more. Organised by Proud 2 Play and Midsumma, look forward to club activities, sports demonstrations and even more come and try sports sessions.
